OVERVIEW OF KWAZULU NATAL FISHING OPPORTUNITIES
Given the right conditions the area from the Wild Coast through KwaZulu Natal up into Zululand on the East Coast of South Africa offers truly outstanding opportunities for almost every salt water angler. The sort of species that can be targeted are Shad (Blue Fish), Kob, Garrick (Leervis), Natal Snoek (Queen Mackerel), King Mackerel, Giant Trevally, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Billfish to mention a few.
What this coastline is really famous for is the huge catches of big Rays and Sharks, one of the most popular being the Giant Guitar Fish. Butterfly and Honeycomb Rays appear in abundance in the summer months. There are many different types of sharks that can be caught throughout the year, the most popular being Black Tip, Bull Sharks, Dusky Sharks, Hammerheads and Bronze Whalers. Our estuaries offer great sport with smaller game fish such as Trevally, Snapper, Ladyfish and Bream.
A short drive north from Durban and you’re in Tiger Fish country on the Pongola River and Jozini Dam. The Tugela and Umkomaas are very well-known for the local Yellow Fish (or Natal Scaley), both of them an easy drive from Durban. There are many local dams that are well-known for their big Bass, Carp and Tilapia.
Besides the estuaries the Richards Bay and Durban harbours offer some really great light and ultra-light tackle fishing. Richards Bay in particular is very well-known for the huge variety of species that can be caught on ultra-light lure fishing outfits.
Barry has represented South Africa in Shore Angling for many years but is probably best known for pioneering the modern form of shore-based lure fishing in South Africa and Mozambique especially for Giant Trevally, Queen and King Mackerel. He is extremely knowledgeable in all facets of fishing and where or when to target particular species. Having been involved in the fishing tackle industry for almost thirty years, Barry has an excellent knowledge of all technical aspects of the game.
Barry has fished the entire South African coastline and many of its inland rivers and dams. He has also fished in Mexico, America, Europe, Gabon, Angola, Namibia, Australia (East and West Coasts), Mozambique, Madagascar, Seychelles, Oman and the UAE. Barry’s experience on these trips has given him an in-depth understanding of what is required when providing services to individuals or groups.
If you are going to get hooked up anywhere in Southern Africa he would certainly be the right person to make it happen.
Blayne’s is one of the country’s top shore-anglers and although he is more than capable of catching whatever swims, his passion is definitely big fish. His other passion is lure fishing, both from the shore and off-shore. Blayne has a lot of experience fishing for game fish off kayaks and fly-fishing for South Africa’s indigenous Yellow Fish. He is also proficient when fishing in estuaries, rivers and dams for Tiger Fish and Bass.
Blayne has fished in Gabon, Namibia, Mozambique and the whole South African coastline. His Yellow Fish experience has been primarily in the Umkomaas, Tugela, Orange and Vaal Rivers. Tiger Fishing experience has been at Jozini Dam and the Komatipoort area of the Eastern Transvaal.
Having worked in fishing tackle retail for many years, Blayne’s technical knowledge on fishing tackle is one of his strengths. He is also very good at rigging and setting up equipment.
A passionate angler with an educational background Keegan takes great satisfaction in sharing his time accumulated fishing knowledge. He has been a fishing guide, both locally and internationally, with focus on his primary area of expertise - Fly Fishing. Working in a fishing tackle retail environment Keegan has become the go-to fisherman when clients are looking for advice on to fly fish our local river systems, for indigenous species such as Yellowfish and Carp on fly.
When it comes to Freshwater Keegan has spent time on most Kwazulu Natal rivers, the Vaal-Orange system and several other South Africa rivers as well as larger still waters. He has spent time in Zimbabwe targeting Bass, Tilapia species, Vundu, Cornish Jack and Tigerfish in the Zambezi river and on Lake Kariba. Keegan assisted a well known fishing tour operator in the Selou (Tanzania) targeting and guiding for the Blue Tigerfish on fly.

Shaun Jacobs is a highly skilled multi faceted fisherman who upon leaving school worked as a private fishing guide in Mozambique, (Bazaruto Island in particular) targeting serious gamefish both offshore and from the surf.
Following this Shaun then moved to the Seychelles where he was a fly guide for the Alphonse fishing company working as a flats guide and head blue water skipper where wahoo and sailfish were the primary species targeted on fly.
Shaun will tell you that he doesn't have a preferred facet of angling, as this very competent guide enjoys each facet equally. If variety is your game, Shaun should be your guide.

With St. Lucia as his boyhood stomping ground, William grew up surrounded by a passion for all things fishing.
This passion spurred him to cast a wide net in terms of his interests, learning and experiencing as much as he could about different areas from shark fishing to grunter fishing and beyond. However, this Jack of all trades is far from being a master of none.
Instead, this curiosity has led to a vast knowledge of rock and surf, deep sea, and bass fishing as well as artificial salt water angling—a diversity he takes pride in.
